Build a Supply Network That Can Travel

Your city can run out of construction materials while its living home decides to leave the star system. Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics matters because planetary resources, local production, and Kewa’s travel decisions all affect whether your Peeps can keep building. To manage Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics, stabilize your settlement, establish useful outposts, and keep supplies moving without exhausting the whale carrying everything.

Kewa remains your main home throughout the journey. Planetary settlements supplement that home with materials, crops, and other resources that expand your production options. That creates a two-way economy: Kewa helps new outposts get established, and those outposts eventually send valuable goods back.

Build around that exchange. Before settling a planet, identify what it offers, what its residents will need, and which supplies must arrive from elsewhere.

This guide covers the prelaunch shipping systems and October 2026 preview mechanics ahead of the scheduled October 16 release. Start with Story Mode and its optional tutorial helpers to learn the systems as they become available.

Establish Planetary Outposts Without Stranding Supplies

Exploration begins with identifying what is actually available around you. The Solar System View displays nearby celestial objects, while Scout Ships investigate them and reveal whether a planet supports settlement.

Habitable worlds have different biomes and resource combinations. Some provide fertile land and useful animals; others introduce harsher conditions. An outpost can support basic life while still lacking important construction materials.

The ships involved have distinct jobs:

ShipFunctionInfrastructure requirement
Scout ShipInvestigates celestial objects, including planetsOrdinary ships need a Landing Pad to land on Kewa or a planet
Trade ShipCarries resources between Space PortsRequires landing infrastructure at its destinations
Settlement ShipEstablishes a new planetary settlementCan land without an existing Landing Pad

The Settlement Ship deserves special attention. It is an upgraded Home Spaceship, rather than a vessel built through the Spaceship Builder. The conversion replaces the Home Spaceship’s ongoing resource production with additional storage and a Landing Pad attachment.

Prepare your local economy before making that conversion. Check that food, water, and building materials have working production chains. Otherwise, removing the ship’s resource trickle can expose shortages just as you start supporting another settlement.

Once the Settlement Ship lands, its attached pad allows trade connections immediately. However, the ship cannot take off again until you build at least one Space Port at the new location.

For your outpost setup:

  • Investigate the planet with a Scout Ship.
  • Check its resources and environmental conditions.
  • Prepare supplies for the buildings you intend to construct.
  • Establish essential housing and resource production.
  • Build a Space Port before trying to move the Settlement Ship again.

Keep construction focused on the outpost’s purpose. If you need shells or wool, establish the supporting infrastructure for those resources before committing materials to a larger town. Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics becomes easier to follow when each settlement has a clear contribution.

Choose Manual or Automated Shipping by the Job

Shipping connects Space Ports directly. Each port can have up to four Landing Pads, and each pad accommodates one ship at a time.

Those limits matter when diagnosing delays. A settlement can have resources available and Trade Ships operating, yet still face pressure at its landing facilities.

The two shipping modes serve different needs:

Shipping modeHow it worksUse it for
ManualGives control over the resources, quantities, destinations, and timing of a shipmentSpecific construction deliveries or urgent shortages
AutomatedMaintains an ongoing supply based on your configured resource needsRecurring consumption and regular outpost exports

Use manual shipping for a finite delivery. Sending 20 wood and 15 glass, for example, is the kind of precise construction shipment the system supports. Match the shipment to your actual building needs.

Use automated shipping when a destination repeatedly consumes the same resource. Once an outpost starts supplying materials to Kewa, automation reduces the need to arrange every delivery individually.

Reverse the Supply Flow as the Outpost Develops

A new settlement initially needs support. Construction supplies flow outward while you establish infrastructure such as water pumps, woodcutters, and bridges.

Later, the planet’s distinctive resources flow back toward Kewa. That transition is central to Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics: the outpost progresses from consuming startup materials to contributing to your wider economy.

Review its continuing needs before reducing support shipments. A planet with useful food resources can still depend on imported industrial materials.

Check the Port Before Adding Ships

When deliveries lag in Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics, inspect the destination’s landing capacity and local resource handling. Additional Trade Ships cannot solve every problem.

Use the port’s available Landing Pads to address congestion, then check what happens after unloading. Resources still need to reach storage or production buildings, so a long local journey can remain a bottleneck even after the space flight ends.

Place Space Ports with their surrounding supply routes in mind. Leave room for roads, storage, and the buildings that will consume incoming goods.

Fix Local Bottlenecks Before Expanding the Network

Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics depends on the smaller movements happening inside each settlement. Imports have little value when a factory lacks workers, power, or somewhere to put its output.

In the October 2026 preview, production buildings offer controls for fetching inputs and delivering outputs. Input collection can trigger at different storage levels, while output delivery can wait for a full load, move any available load, or be stopped.

Adjust those settings around the problem you see. If a building repeatedly waits for materials, inspect its input-fetching threshold. If goods accumulate inside it, check output delivery and available storage.

Plan for Useful Goods and Byproducts

Several production chains create both a valuable product and waste:

Production buildingInputs or processProduct and byproduct
Ore SmelterUses iron ore and electricityProduces iron and soot
ToolsmithUses wood, iron, and powerProduces tools and slag

Wood waste can fuel a Burner Generator. Allocate storage for the byproducts your current industry produces, and check which available buildings can consume them.

Inspect every output when production stops. Room for tools does not automatically mean the building has room for slag.

Configure Storage Sheds deliberately rather than allowing every resource to compete for the same space. Their work settings let you choose what they hold.

Check material demand across construction and production. If an essential building is waiting for materials, check which active processes are consuming them and adjust priorities.

Keep Roads Short and Power Connected

Roads are free to build in the preview, but Peeps still spend time traveling along them. Extend the network with destinations in mind rather than laying long routes simply because they cost no materials.

Early power transmission also depends on adjacency. A powered building can pass electricity to another adjacent building, allowing a Generator, Ore Smelter, and Toolsmith to form a connected chain.

Read adjacency effects before placing each building. Some combinations trade production speed for output, happiness, or pollution reduction. Choose the effect that addresses your current shortage, and leave practical road access.

When a chain stalls, work through these checks:

SymptomCheckAction
Missing inputResource availability, competing consumers, fetching settingsRestore supply or adjust priorities
Full output storageEvery product and byproductAllocate storage or activate an available consuming chain
No powerAdjacency connectionsRestore the electricity connection
Empty work slotsAvailable workers, shifts, energy, and happinessAddress staffing or Peep needs

Keep Kewa and Your Workforce Ready to Travel

Kewa’s condition affects Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics directly. A healthy Kewa travels faster, while a strong relationship helps you collaborate on the journey and makes the time available around outposts easier to anticipate.

Protecting that relationship requires attention to the settlement’s environment. Planting trees, reducing pollution, and creating rivers support Kewa’s biome. Forests also help spread the atmosphere, making them part of your expansion infrastructure.

Reserve room for greenery and cleanup as industry grows. Concentrating factories can simplify power connections, but pollution affects nearby land and the Peeps crossing it.

Prepare for Temperature Changes and Repairs

Different regions have different temperatures. Staying too long in extreme heat or cold affects Peep mood and crop growth. Prolonged heat can also make Kewa unhappy enough to initiate emergency travel toward a colder area.

Check environmental conditions alongside your resource needs. A productive outpost does not remove the consequences of keeping Kewa in an uncomfortable region.

Clothing adds another preparation chain. Wool and cotton feed Weavers, which produce fabrics for Tailors to turn into cold-weather or warm-weather clothing. Establish those supplies before depending on extended work in harsh conditions.

Kewa also needs stamina. When it runs low during travel, they can detour through debris fields to feed. Falling debris can damage buildings, which then require repairs before production resumes.

Keep repair materials available and inspect essential buildings after those encounters. Restoring food, water, and industrial inputs prevents damage from spreading into additional shortages.

Protect the Peeps Who Move Everything

Shipping and production depend on a functioning workforce. Low-energy Peeps have a greater chance of becoming sick at the beginning of a shift, and sick Peeps stay home.

Manage workload, rest, food, and housing before demanding more output. Apothecary products help Peeps recover energy, while more complex meals provide additional benefits.

Unhappiness can also trigger strikes. Some production stops, and striking Peeps can obstruct those still working. Complete the strike’s assigned goal—such as adding housing or cleaning toxic areas—to end it early.

High happiness has rewards, too. Celebrations can provide production, movement, and sickness bonuses without shutting down working buildings.

Before your next expansion, check four things: essential supplies are flowing, waste has somewhere to go, Peeps can recover between shifts, and Kewa’s environment remains healthy. Then use the Beyond These Stars Steam page to download the demo and practice the settlement systems.

FAQ

How does Beyond These Stars interstellar logistics work?

Trade Ships move resources directly between Space Ports. New planetary outposts initially receive supplies for construction, then export distinctive resources back to Kewa. Manual shipping handles specific deliveries; automated shipping maintains recurring supplies.

Can a Settlement Ship land without a Space Port?

Yes. The Settlement Ship can land without an existing Landing Pad and deploys its own attached pad. After landing, it needs at least one Space Port built at that location before it can take off again.

How many Landing Pads can a Space Port have?

A Space Port can have up to four Landing Pads, with one ship accommodated on each pad at a time. Check landing capacity when deliveries face congestion.

Why does Kewa’s happiness matter for shipping?

Your relationship with Kewa affects how well you can collaborate on travel and anticipate time around outposts. Healthier Kewa travels faster, while prolonged heat can trigger emergency travel to a colder region.
